Notes
Wow. Who'd have thought it!This is Skateboard Music is a fab collection of original tracks from the 70s that came out to accompany the second-wave of the skateboard craze that hit the world during 1970-1975.
At this time people worked feverishly on the sound that should accompany the new, but rapidly growing phenomenon. Everyone wanted to write the one summer-hit and to create the soundtrack of this movement. Yet, actually nobody really knew what it should sound like exactly...!
The perfectly harmonic part-singing of bands like the English Carvells recalls the surf music of the 60s and especially the Beach Boys. Zack Ferguson, who rocked Italian discos with his "Aa Aa Uu Aa Ee" in 1979, presents with Skateboard Dancin' a piece of eccentric disco-pop and Zafra's Skateboard Shuffle is solid Funk. Mr. "The Singin' Surfer" Corky Carroll, who is best known for Tan Punks on Board, a modern surf music classic, delivers with Skateboard Bill a piece of classic American song-writing.
Powerpop bands like The Rivals and Wood Lane's Skateboard Saturday show that skateboarding was also very much en vogue in England. And even Marc Bolan was infected with the skateboard virus as his rare T. Rex demo-track Skateboard shows.
It's exactly this variety that makes the music on This is Skateboard Music so charming, because one can already sense the marketing efforts, but it still is - at least of todayıs perspective - wonderfully naive.
So if you want to immerse yourself in the world of Californian pools, nose wheelies, 360s, and teenager dreams on four wheels, this is your sound!
